Caroline Marks Secures Final Paris 2024 Olympic Games Slot Available on WSL Championship Tour

Updated: Sep 13, 2023

The ISA is pleased to confirm that Tokyo 2020 Olympian Caroline Marks (USA) has earned the final Paris 2024 Olympic Games slot available to surfers on the World Surf League (WSL) Championship Tour (CT) after beating Caitlin Simmers (USA) in Match 2 of the WSL Finals and further becoming the 2023 WSL CT Champion.

The 2023 CT awards Paris 2024 qualification slots to the top ten men and top eight women, with a limit of two surfers per gender, per nation.

Marks won the recent WSL CT event held at the Olympic Surfing venue of Teahupo’o, the Tahiti Pro, and will enter her second Olympic Games with another chance to medal, after Amuro Tsuzuki (JPN) defeated her in the Bronze Medal Match in the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.

As a result of the women’s USA team ranking highest at the 2022 ISA World Surfing Games in Huntington Beach, there is an additional women’s slot available for their nation, allowing Simmers to still have a chance to represent her nation in Paris 2024. The process of selection for that surfer will be decided by USA Surfing and the US Olympic and Paralympic Committee (NOC).

Marks joins fellow Paris 2024 qualified WSL CT surfers Brisa Hennessy (CRC), Carissa Moore (USA), Johanne Defay (FRA), Molly Picklum (AUS), Tatiana Weston-Webb (BRA), Teresa Bonvalot (POR), and Tyler Wright (AUS).

On the men’s side the surfers who have qualified through the WSL CT are Ethan Ewing (AUS), Filipe Toledo (BRA), Griffin Colapinto (USA), Jack Robinson (AUS), João Chianca (BRA), John John Florence (USA), Jordy Smith (RSA), Matthew McGillivray (RSA), Kanoa Igarashi (JPN), and Leonardo Fioravanti (ITA).

All earned Paris 2024 slots are subject to nomination by the respective NOC and meeting the ISA Olympic Eligibility Requirements.

ISA President Fernando Aguerre said:

“Congratulations to each of the amazing surfers who have qualified through the WSL CT. I am so excited to see what these incredible athletes will bring to the world class waves of Teahupo’o during the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

“I also cannot wait to see the many surfers who will rise to the occasion and take their place alongside each of those already qualified when the 2024 ISA World Surfing Games in Puerto Rico takes place in February next year.”
