Editor's Note: Our "How I Got the Shot" feature talks with today's leading photographers to get the story behind their most captivating surf photos. This article features surf photographer Jared Weintraub.
Catching this surfer pulling off an epic air at my local beach in Carlsbad, CA remains one of the coolest in-water shots I have to date!
With my water housing all set up, I was right there in the water, ready to capture the action up close and personal.
The surfer caught some serious air, hanging there for what felt like forever, defying gravity. It was one of those moments where you're just in awe of the skill and guts it takes to pull off a move like that.
When I looked back at the shot later, I knew I wanted to add some extra drama to really make it pop. So, I edited the photo in black and white, giving it that classic, filmic look.
It added this timeless quality to the shot, emphasizing the raw energy and emotion of the moment.
I was stoked with how it turned out.
That photo wasn't just a cool shot of a surfer doing an air – it was a snapshot of the passion and excitement that keeps me coming back to the beach day after day.
