Editor's Note: Our "How I Got the Shot" feature talks with today's leading photographers to get the story behind their most captivating surf photos. This article features surf photographer Jared Weintraub.
Capturing my first lookout barrel shot at my home break in Carlsbad, CA, was a game-changer for me. It felt like I was right there in the action, seeing the world through a surfer's eyes as they ride inside the barrel.
When I looked at the shot later, I was blown away – it was the first time I felt like I'd nailed it and could compete with the professional surf photographers.
That's why I named it "Madness" – because that's exactly what it felt like being out there in the water, witnessing that perfect moment unfold.
Using my first camera and my very first SPL water housing, I managed to capture the essence of the wave perfectly.
The vibrant blue of the wave, the glassy water – it all came together in this unexpected shot that quickly became one of my favorites.
It's a reminder of the magic that happens when you're out there, completely immersed in the beauty and power of the ocean.
